Visiting Takanawa Gateway
I recently visited Takanawa Gateway, one of Tokyo’s newest train stations, and had the chance to watch a kabuki performance nearby.
At first glance, this area feels futuristic and new. But beneath the surface, this land holds memories of Edo-era travelers and Japan’s journey into modernization.
Takanawa Was Once the Gateway to Edo
The Takanawa area once sat along the Tokaido, one of the most important roads of the Edo period.
Travelers entering and leaving Edo passed through here, and the area thrived as a starting and ending point for journeys.
Today, remnants of that era can still be seen at the Takanawa Okido gate site.
Kabuki and Edo Culture
Some kabuki plays and lines are connected to Takanawa itself.
Kabuki developed during the Edo period and was a beloved form of entertainment for ordinary people at the time.
Watching the performance gave me a renewed appreciation for the culture that Edo-era people once enjoyed.
The Rakugo Story “Shibahama” and Edo’s Waterfront
Shibahama is a rakugo story set along Edo’s shoreline.
Where buildings now stand, the sea once reached, and daily life was closely tied to the water.
Through this story, I felt a connection to the everyday lives and values of people in the Edo period.
Takanawa Embankment and Japan’s First Railway
Japan’s first railway opened during the Meiji era.
To lay tracks over the water, the Takanawa Chikutei embankment was built.
From the roads of Edo to the railways of modern Japan.
And today, that same ground has become Takanawa Gateway, a new station connecting this place to the future.
Final Thoughts
Edo, Meiji, and the present day all overlap in Takanawa.
The birth of a new town has brought renewed attention to history that had almost been forgotten.
It was a day that made me appreciate that connection.
