Why Calligraphy Works for Team Building

More and more companies are choosing calligraphy as part of their corporate events and team-building programs.

You might be wondering: why calligraphy?

In this article, we share three reasons why calligraphy is uniquely suited for team building, along with a real example from a corporate event.

3 Reasons Calligraphy Works for Team Building

1. Each person connects with their own word

In a calligraphy experience, each participant chooses a kanji character that means something to them.

絆 (Bond), 挑戦 (Challenge), 誠 (Sincerity), 家族 (Family) — the word someone chooses reflects their values and what matters most to them in that moment.

The act of choosing a word becomes an exercise in self-reflection and self-expression.

2. Sharing the work opens up real conversation

When participants come together to share their finished pieces and explain why they chose their word, something shifts. Values and feelings that rarely surface in a meeting room come out naturally.

This is one of calligraphy’s greatest strengths: it creates genuine conversation in a relaxed setting, something a typical workshop rarely achieves.

3. It connects people across languages and cultures

Kanji are visual characters that carry meaning beyond language. Even without speaking Japanese, people can feel the weight of a character like 絆 (Bond) or 一丸 (One Team).

This makes calligraphy especially effective for international and multicultural teams.

A Real Example: A Mixed Japanese and Western Team

As the closing activity of a three-day corporate workshop, a group of 10 participants — 3 Japanese and 7 from Europe and the Americas — took part in a combined calligraphy and matcha experience.

Each person chose their word in advance. On the day, the instructor prepared a handwritten model for each participant, and everyone practiced on washi paper before completing their final piece.

Afterward, each person held up their work and shared the story behind their chosen word.

“Focus,” “Family,” “Humility” — each word came with a personal story, and the team left with a deeper understanding of one another.

Combining calligraphy with a matcha experience also gave participants time to relax and decompress between the more intense parts of the workshop.

How the Experience Works

GreenTeaTokyo’s calligraphy experience for corporate events follows this flow:

① Before the event
Participants let us know which kanji they would like to write. The instructor prepares a handwritten model for each person.

② On the day: practice on washi paper
The instructor guides participants through brush technique and ink handling. Finished pieces are yours to take home.

Calligraphy sessions accommodate up to 10 participants at a time. For groups of 11 or more, participants rotate in smaller groups.

Calligraphy pairs beautifully with a matcha experience. Learn more on our on-site tea ceremony page.
